Past perfect continuous
The past perfect continuous tense (also known as the past perfect progressive tense) shows that an action that started in the past continued up until another time in the past:
Ex : He had been drinking milk out the carton when Mom walked into the kitchen.
He had been throwing rocks at her window for five minutes before she finally came out on the balcony and said, “Hey, Romeo.”
- The past perfect tense emphasizes the result of an activity in the past; In contrast, the past perfect continuous tense emphasizes the duration of an activity in the past.
2. They had been walking for half an hour before they realized they had left the picnic at the hotel.
